Gallery 11/07/95 in Štrosmajerova street will be home to Samarah’s permanent exhibition “Srebrenica – genocide at the heart of Europe”. As a memorial gallery committed to the commemoration of the genocide in Srebrenica, the gallery is the first of its kind in the Sarajevo region.
As the initiator of Thursday’s fundraising exhibition, Norwegian Ambassador Jan Braathu emphasized the importance of such a gallery in the capitol of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Gallery 11/07/95 will be a central cultural point in Sarajevo, giving tourists, school classes and visitors in general, as well as Sarajevans alike the possibility of learning about the Srebrenica massacre, Ambassador Braathu said. This will deepen the understanding of the background for the conflict and contribute to increased knowledge about the nature of genocide, and the consequences of intolerance and nationalism in general.
According to Samarah, Gallery 11/07/95 is of crucial importance also in countering the denial of genocide which one can experience in Bosnia and Herzegovina today.
Tarik Samarah’s work has been widely exhibited also internationally. His Srebrenica exhibition was displayed at the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC on the tenth anniversary of Srebrenica in 2005, and has furthermore been on display in the UN building in New York. Samarah’s billboard campaign “To see, to Know, and to Remember” in Serbia in 2005 also drew wide public attention.
