CHANGE IN THE PASSPORT APPLICATION PROCEDURES AS OF 6 APRIL As of 6 April 2010 all applicants have to provide biometric data when applying for a new Norwegian passport (is also required by the police in Norway). Biometric data consists of photo, signature and two fingerprints.

It will no longer be possible to apply for personal ID number and passport at the same time. As of 6 April all applicants must have received a personal ID number from the Civil Registry before a passport application can be lodged at the Embassy. Application for personal ID number will still have to be submitted through the Embassy. For further information check here http://www.norveska.ba/Embassy/Visa-and-other-permits/namecahange/ This reason for this change is to meet the requirements from the Schengen Member States regarding biometric passports. Applicants have to apply in person at the Embassy to pay the fee and provide their biometric data, i.e. photo, two fingerprints and signature.

The necessary equipment has already been installed at the Embassy. The police in Norway will start using identical equipment from the same date. The new biometric passports are produced in Norway and the application will still be forwarded electronically from the Embassy to the Producer. Applicants will be contacted by the Embassy in order to pick up the passport when it is ready.

Norwegian citizens permanently residing abroad may still lodge an application for new passport at a police office in Norway during a stay there. Information on applicants will be saved in accordance with valid laws and rules at all times. Emergency passports are exempt from the requirements on biometrics. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Police Directorate in Norway are presently working on new guidelines regarding emergency passports.

Passport lost or stolen

When you receive your passport it is advisable to make a photocopy of the first page or take note of your passport details. This information should be kept somewhere safe, and away from your passport in case it is lost or stolen.
If your passport is stolen abroad, you should immediately report the loss to the nearest police station. The police will subsequently issue a report stating that your passport has been lost. Please bring this report when you turn to the Embassy for assistance. The Embassy can help you either by issuing a new passport or a temporary travel document. You will be charged a fee equal to the fee of a normal passport.

As the passports are produced in Norway the processing time is 2-3 weeks.

Applicants will be contacted by the Embassy upon arrival of the new passport.

Personal ID Number

Norwegian citizens who were born abroad must apply to obtain a personal ID number. Application must be submitted via the Embassy to the Norwegian authority. For children the Embassy needs the birth certificate (either in original or certified copy), parents' marriage certificate (either in original or certified copy) and copies of the parents' passports. Birth certificate and/or marriage certificate have to be in Norwegian, English, French or German. Please be aware that application process for a personal ID number is 6-8 weeks.
