Visa liberalization for citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Last updated: 07/02/2011 // After the approval of the visa liberalization, citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina holding biometric passports will be entitled to travel to the Schengen countries without a visa.

Citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina may stay for a period of 90 days in the Schengen countries. The visa liberalization means that BH citizens will be able to travel to 28 countries that make up the Schengen area; Austria, Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Since Ireland and the United Kingdom have not signed the Schengen agreement, a visa will still be required to enter these countries. Visa liberalization does not imply the right to residence or work permit, to obtain these permits old procedures still apply.

It is also important to remember that the period of stay is only 90 days within a period of 180 days. An overstay might result in a travel ban for the whole Schengen area.

Upon entering the Schengen area, questions as to the purpose of the journey and the financial means for the trip may be asked.  If the purpose is to visit a friend or relative, an invitation letter, a guarantee form and contact info is advisable.  If you travel simply as a tourist, a hotel reservation and proof of financial means for the stay should be provided.

A health and travel insurance covering the full period of stay in the Schengen area is strongly recommended.  The possible costs for medical treatment in case of illness or accident during a stay in the Schengen area could be considerable and not being in a position to cover the bills might result in a future travel ban for the whole Schengen area for the person in question.
