”Basic Education Right”

The Norwegian Ambassador, Jan Braathu, visited a school in the village of Todorovska Slapnica in Una-Sana Canton on 13 February 2007 in relation to the Norwegian funded project “Basic Education Right” in the district. The project has gone over a three year period (2003-2006) and Save the Children Norway has been responsible for the implementation of the project.

The aim of this project has been to improve the access of basic education among children in Central Bosnia Canton and Una-Sana Canton where the project is currently being implemented in BiH.

There might be several reasons to why children do not attend school. Difficult social conditions in the family, the attitude of the parents, costly transportation, expensive school material, and lack of adapted teaching for pupils with special needs are some of the reasons. Several of the pupils who have now returned to school fell outside the school system because they were refugees during and after the war in the 1990s.

The visit to the school in Todorovska Slapnica was introduced by a round-table discussion on the importance of the “Basic Education Right” project. Representatives from the Una-Sana Canton also presented the positive results of the project so far, and they could inform that drop-out pupils were returning to school. The project has focused on cooperation with the parents and information about the importance of education and the positive future effects it has.

Ambassador Braathu expressed satisfaction about the positive effects of the projects. He emphasised the role of individuals in this connection, and stressed that this project is about the individuals’ rights to education and to participate in the local community. "Education is an investment in the future of BiH, but this demands that every person makes a contribution", ambassador Braathu stated.
