Ibsen statue unveiled in Tuzla

As a perfect end of the Ibsen centennial in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a statue of Henrik Ibsen was unvaibled in Tuzla October 27.

For years, the mayor of Tuzla has had the wish to see a statue of the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen (1828 - 1906) on the municipality's premises. The October 27 2006 Jasmin Imamovic got his wish fulfilled, as the Norwegian ambassador Jan Braathu unveiled the bronze head, made by the Norwegian artist Ferdinand Wyller. The statue is beautifully placed in the garden of Tuzla Theater, and will hopefully inspire the theater to play some of Ibsens world famous plays, and the population of Tuzla to enjoy the treasure he left the world after more than 50 years of writing.

Henrik Ibsen is often considered the father of modern drama. Characters in his plays continue to engage audiences all over the world, and many of the socio-political topics brought up in his dramas are now central themes in world politics, for instance the UN agenda: Freedom of speech, equal rights and corruption are but a few examples. Every week, Ibsen’s plays are performed on between 120 and 150 stages around the world.
