Bosnia and Herzegovina as a country in transition is facing serious problems in the water sector, in particular with regard to the unsatisfactory developed institutional capacities. The river Vrbas is a strategic important water resource in BiH, but as waste water treatment plant does not exist in the municipalities, waste water is directly discharged into River Vrbas. Each municipality has its own communal service company and municipal service companies are facing lack of organizational, institutional and financial capacities.
This funding is a continuation of a previous project in the area and is aiming at institutional strengthening and capacity building of the Public Regional Communal Service Company, municipal communal service companies and municipalities in order to prepare the pre-feasibility study. The pre feasibility study will cover needs for infrastructure development and needs for future institutional/capacity building in the municipalities as well as sustainable functioning of the Public Regional Communal Service Company. In result the beneficiaries will be better prepared to manage waste water improvements infrastructure projects.
The project should try to ensure the cooperation with down stream municipalities of River Vrbas. The goal of the project will be realized through organizing a number of workshops and training on different topics, as well as a possible study tour to one of the new EU member state in order to get better knowledge in the field of waste water issues.
The project was initiated by Regional Environmental Centre for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) in Hungary.
